Old Meets New
Collaborative Project
So excited to collaborate with our friends at Jillian Dinkel Designs on this beautiful project. This renovated home is the perfect mix of old and new with divine heritage features, refreshed and brought to life by adding new materials and allowing natural light to flood in.
We felt privileged to be able to put the finishing touches on this stunning home through our input on the exteriors. We were very taken with the charred timber cladding used to cover the home’s rear façade.
Q & A
With project architect, Maryanne Taskovski
Can you tell us a little about where this type of charred timber material originally came from?
Charred timber is traditionally a Japanese technique. It creates this wonderful and almost velvet look on the surface of the timber.
Why did you decide to use this material on this particular project?
Sustainability was one aspect of the choice, being a recycled timber. Aesthetically these courtyard walls are a backdrop to the garden, and the black is a great contrast to the landscaping. Practically it has lots of benefits, charring the timber actually deters insects and improves the durability of the timber. The thing I like about it is that It has the advantage of colouring the timber with a long term colour option.
Have you used it on other projects before or if this was the first time, would you use it again?
I'm a big fan of this product and this is only my second time using it in the space of a couple years. Both results were amazing!
Can you share with us and our readers where they can get the charred timber cladding?
It's important to use the right supplier, not every charred timber is created equally. We sourced this timber from Australian Architectural Hardwoods, their products are milled exclusively from recycled timbers. I like the sustainability of that choice and also the fact that the timber has a story to it before it came to be used on someone's home.
