Garden of The Year 2024
Adam Robinson Design Sydney
We are thrilled to announce that Adam Robinson Garden Design has won InsideOut and Brickworks Home of the Year 2024 Best Garden Design for our Modern Mediterranean entry. We designed a simplified outdoor space with a rustic colour and material scheme to complement the interior of this home that was designed by Alexandra Kidd. The courtyard features a long concrete bench that offers ample seating and raised planters with gentle, textural plantings.
We had the pleasure of partnering with Alexandra Kidd Interior Design to transform a cold, unwelcoming, outdated three-bedroom Victorian terrace in Woollahra into a warm, inviting, and modern home filled with natural light and built to endure the fickle fancies and trends of the time to be an elegant, classic home.
This space beautifully exemplifies minimalist warmth—a modern Mediterranean courtyard that embraces a restrained design with a rustic, earthy colour palette. A generous distressed concrete bench stretches across the courtyard, ideal for hosting large gatherings. Its ample seating exudes a relaxed charm, enhancing the sense of openness and tranquillity.
Raised planters, clad in colourful terracotta tiles, conceal the air conditioning units while providing a lush, contemporary green view from the kitchen and dining areas. The BBQ area features a polished concrete countertop with earthy terracotta-tiled cabinets below.
The plant selection adds depth and texture, combining soft, feminine varieties with seasonal blooms that nod to the classic Victorian terrace. Plants used include Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender,' Hydrangea quercifolia, Anemone x hybrida, Buxus microphylla, Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost,' and Elaeagnus macrophylla.
The paving consists of soft warm grey stones laid in varying lengths for a timeless touch. The existing stone wall was cleaned and repointed, and an old ladder on-site was refurbished and painted to blend with the new design. It now serves as a practical element for accessing the higher garden areas.
This outdoor space offers an open, inviting environment for entertaining, complete with ample seating and an outdoor kitchen and dining area that seamlessly connects the indoor and outdoor living spaces, enhancing the bond between the home and its surroundings.
