Heritage Charmer
ARD in House & Garden September 2023
This charming inner-city, heritage terrace in Sydney has largely retained most of its original traditional features. However, the exterior garden spaces are contemporary and slick.
We worked closely with interior designer, Jillian Dinkel who specialises in adapting period homes to modern lifestyles and the brief given to Adam Robinson Design was to design all aspects of the garden and create an oasis in the middle of the city, with a courtyard to surprise and delight, and equally suited to the client hosting long Christmas lunches with family and friends.
For the front garden, to suit the traditional façade of the terrace house, an accent feature pot with an Epiphyllum anguliger - Zig Zag Cactus that is super low maintenance and appropriate for this shady spot by the front door.
The rooftop garden that flows out from the main bedroom was planted out with hardy, low maintenance succulents and cascading plants that trail over the edge towards the courtyard below with dining banquette which is glimpsed below. The rooftop garden can be viewed from the level above where the children’s bedrooms are. There are wonderful green vistas from every level of this home.
At the pinnacle of the house is another rooftop terrace with stunning city views, styled with pots, plant and furniture.
The rear courtyard garden on ground level, while quite a small space, is designed to be incredibly functional, comfortable and a magnet to draw people outside to enjoy the outdoors, flowing seamlessly from a generous kitchen/dining/living room. For a busy family, the design of the living area is perfect, providing generously delineated areas within one lofty plane, especially in addition to the courtyard – what you end up with is a living zone where everyone in the family can relax together.
