Cape Trends
Haldane and Tonic
Capensis (Latin for “from the Cape”) is the exclusive distributor of two leading designer brands, HALDANE, and TONIC. Haldane’s iconic outdoor furniture range and Tonic’s beautiful interior pieces. founded by Sydney based, Justine Holmner and Candice Shakenovsky, aims to bring to the Australian market, a designer furniture offering that is unique, high quality and well-priced relative to its competitors.
HALDANE’S director and designer is Haldane Martin, world-renowned for designing furniture with a powerful sense of identity. His earlier works are proclaimed as significant contributions to the development of a unique South African design vocabulary.
Now focussed on premium outdoor furniture designed in Cape Town, Haldane combines his amazing design with his love of the outdoors offering authentic self-expression and enduring connection with nature in beauty and comfort.
Here are some of Haldane’s collection pieces we loved the most…
CHA CHA
The Cha Cha Occasional tables create the illusion of movement, creating an optical illusion as your eyes glide around the closely spaced stainless steel rods that form line Moire patterns on the columnated base. The fluted base contrasts with simple tabletops – slivered disks in monochromatic colours from laser cut stainless steel – to form minimalist Memphis-like plinths. The playful tables can be combined into different compositions with varied hieights and diameters.
HULA
Hula is playful and nostalgic and is reminiscent of a hula hoop. This metropolitan outdoor chair collection pays homage to the classic Salterini Hoop Chairs of the 1950’s – a popular feature in South African gardens in the 1970’s.
PAPA SUN
Curvaceous frames with minimal round stainless-steel tubing, supported by curved ribs of stainless-steel rods. They come in 20 UV-stable powder coat colours. These moon-shaped pods wrap around with modern fibre upholstered cushions.
SONGOLOLO
The Songololo is an iconic centipede-like sofa with its multitude of legs, flexibility, and sophisticated look. This contoured form is customisable and takes shape as an outstanding centrepiece in almost any space, indoors and out. Haldane’s timeless reinvention of the classic 70’s sectional sofa was originally launched over a decade ago in 2007. Now, re-engineered, the Songololo is crawling outdoors in world-leading, high-tech outdoor performance fabrics and UV-stable powder coated aluminium.
