As courtyards replace backyards as the primary outdoor space in many inner-city areas, we gave this modest sized courtyard a complete overhaul, transforming it into a modern, edgy, informal space that’s now a joyful place for dining, cooking and lounging.

The boundary fences feel light, modern and fresh in an interesting mix of tile and timber, so you don’t feel closed in, and the living space indoors flows outside unhindered.

The bold polished concrete benchtop has sliding door storage beneath and geometric cross-shaped tiles on the wall above and below that look amazing in the space and will only improve with age as they patina.

The palm tree adds scale and is giving a sense of a ceiling for intimacy and dappled shade with the rest of the unique and sculptural plant selection (Phoenix roebelenii, Elodea, Euphorbia tirucalli, kalanchoe, Kalanchoe beharensis, Agave and Crassula Blue Bird) staged in dramatic pots. The furnishings are fun, functional and smart.
