Kalanchoe Behrensis

A Succulent Shrub

Kalanchoe beharensis is a plant species in the succulent genus Kalanchoe, and the family Crassulaceae.  Kalanchoe beharensis is native to Madagascar and is a succulent shrub that slowly grows up to aprox 3.6mtrs tall. It has woody stems and large, undulated and folded, olive-green, slightly-triangular leaves with a soft, browny, velvet-like texture.  Once the shrub matures, it produces small greenish-yellow flowers.

As with succulents in general, this is a low-maintenance plant, however you need to be cautious about light levels. Intense sunlight can burn the tips of the leaves – but they do like bright sunny locations.  Water moderately throughout the summer and reduce watering in winter, letting the soil surface dry out between waterings.

These plants grow well in containers and will require repotting every few years. When re-potting, take care when handling the leaves as they are brittle and can break off easily. Terracotta pots work extremely well for Kalanchoe beharensis.
