Cinematic Transformation

We love interior design studio Plantea’s transformation of Sala Equis – a series of spaces in the aging structure of an old and abandoned adult cinema in Madrid.  The owner of the building wanted a new concept for the cinema with live music, circus performances, presentations, conferences, exhibitions etc, integrating with the design shop, restaurant and art gallery located in the annex to the cinema.

The 700 square metre venue is built around a multi-levelled plaza full of interesting vegetation that brings character to the exterior walls of the square, and the fluro signs in the manner of the old American cinemas add a classic tone to the concept. The exterior and interior areas blur seamlessly together with a huge skylight that floods  light into the space.

The planting was done in collaboration with Rent-a-Garden. Striped, folding deck chairs and outdoor sofas suit the outside-in vibe with the distressed walls and decorative details nodding toward the heritage notes of the building.

This wonderful intermediate space between the street and the inner amphitheatre acts as an outdoor cinema, a place to wait for friends and have a drink at the bar.
