Cloud Trees
Niwaki
Cloud pruned trees are a type of bonsai and are also known as ‘Niwaki’ – a Japanese term that means a style of tree pruning which originated in Japan centuries ago and had been brought to Europe but have spread throughout the world.
Cloud trees differ from bonsai trees because they are not miniature but come in a range of larger sizes. Also, typically, they are planted in the ground rather than in a container.
The tree is shaped using topiary techniques – the leaves pruned into a ball or cloud shape, leaving the stems thin and exposed. The whole tree is meant to represent a whole set of clouds grouped together. Cloud trees are fast becoming a popular statement or feature plant used by our team at Adam Robinson Design as well as other landscape designers in Australia to give structure and premise to any outdoor space
